There is a great importance to having a working fire alarm in your home. A smoke alarm is actually one of the most important things for everyone to have in their home, with the reason that you need a fire alarm being that most fatal home fires happen at night when people are sleeping.

Therefore they may not even realize that there is a fire at all until it is too late. With a fire alarm however, you are able to be alerted by the alarm when it detects fire and are able to get yourself and the family out on time.

Choosing the Right Alarm

The process of choosing your fire alarm should be one that you take very seriously. After all, there are quite a few different makes and models of alarms to choose from, and you need to ensure that you are choosing one that is going to be right for your home and your needs.

When you are out trying to decide on an alarm, there are a few things that you want to keep in mind. First check to make sure that it has been tested to the CAN/ULC S531-M standard by an approved testing agency. You also want to make sure that you are aware there are two types of smoke alarms for home use: ionization and photoelectric alarms.

You also need to figure out how many of these alarms you are going to need. You figure that, because the purpose of these alarms is basically to ensure that sleeping persons are woken up, you will obviously then want to have at least one smoke detector in any hallway with bedrooms aligning it, or one in each bedroom if you really want to be safe.

You then have all the smoke detectors set up together so that if there is a fire in the kitchen for instance, the smoke detector will sound and will set off the rest of the detectors, even those all the way on the other side of the home where the smoke from the fire may not have even reached yet.

Just make sure that you not only find the right fire alarm for your home but also that you take the time to check the batteries on a regular basis and routinely check to see that the alarm is working. After all there is no point to having smoke alarms in your home if they are not even working.
